Questions & Answers
Braces Q & A
If you’re bothered by the appearance of crooked teeth, or you can’t bite or chew properly because your teeth are misaligned, you may be a candidate for braces.
Braces and other types of dental aligners can correct:
- Protruding teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Gap teeth
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Overcrowded teeth
Teeth straightening is often performed during the teenage years, but it’s become quite common for adults to wear straightening devices as well.
Cosmetic Dentistry Center offers several options for fixed braces, as well as options for removable aligners. Some of these options include:
Traditional braces
Traditional metal braces are made of high-quality, lightweight stainless steel. Metal brackets are attached to your individual teeth with a strong adhesive. The brackets are connected to one another by wire, which your dentist gradually tightens, slowly pulling your teeth into alignment.
Ceramic braces
Ceramic braces work just like traditional braces, except the brackets are made of a ceramic material that looks similar to your tooth enamel, so they’re less noticeable than metal braces.
Clear braces
Clear braces are also fixed braces, but the brackets and wires are made of clear plastic.
Clear aligners
Clear aligners like Invisalign® and ClearCorrect™ are sometimes referred to as “invisible braces.” Aligners are a series of custom-fitted removable trays; you wear one tray for a certain amount of time, then switch to the next tray in the series. Invisible aligners gently shift your teeth as you progress through your individual treatment plan.
A consultation with an expert provider at Cosmetic Dentistry Center is the only way to determine exactly which type of braces is best for you or your teen.
In general, clear aligners are better for more mild straightening, and fixed braces are better for complicated realignment goals. If you have several alignment conditions to be corrected, traditional metal braces may be required. For mild, cosmetic straightening, veneers are sometimes the best solution; veneers can also be used in combination with braces.
