What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a way to replace teeth that have been lost to decay or which have been lost due to trauma.
They are often considered the best way of replacing teeth as the implant post replaces the natural tooth root.
An implant tooth can look exactly like a natural tooth, and can be treated in exactly the same way as you would your own teeth. Dental implants can replace:
- Single tooth
- Several teeth
- Complete set of teeth
Implants can secure crowns, bridges or dentures.
Conventional dental implants generally consist of three different parts.
- Implant post: There is an implant post that is made from titanium, and which is inserted into the jawbone. Titanium is used because it integrates well with existing bone.
- Abutment: An abutment is attached to the implant post, and this sticks up above the gum line, almost like a very small tooth. Abutments can vary according the final restoration, as those used to hold dentures are quite different from those used to hold a crown.
- Crowns and bridges: The final part of the implant is the restoration. Crowns and bridges can be cemented or screwed in place and cannot be removed except by your dentist, while dentures will clip into place and can be removed.
What is the Dental Implant Procedure?
Best rated dental implants specialist in Brooklyn Dr. Epelboym will need to spend quite some time planning the implant surgery. This process involves taking down your medical history to see if you are suitable for dental implants, and assessing the bone in your jaw through the use of CT scans and dental x-rays.
These show the structures in your jaw in great detail, and are essential for planning successful implants. The dental implant procedure is really quite short, and we will make sure you have plenty of anesthetic so you don’t feel a thing.
A single implant can take as little as half an hour to insert into the jaw. Once it is placed your gum will be sutured back in position, completing this stage of surgery.
The next stage is to let it heal, a process called osseointegration that can take anywhere between three and six months for conventional implants. This stage is essential to ensure the implant is strongly rooted in your jaw. Once osseointegration is completed then your dentist will be able to attach the abutment. The final step will be to take impressions of the abutment so your crown or bridge can be fabricated.
Implant Supported Dentures
The procedure is slightly different for dentures, as they are either fit onto a bar that is attached to the implants or will snap onto specially shaped attachments.
Most people will use dental implants to secure a lower denture, and this can be done with as few as four dental implants. However dental implants can be used to secure upper dentures, although at least six implants will be required.
How much do Dental Implants Cost?
Tooth implant cost can vary according to the type of implant, and the type of tooth or crown used to restore the implant.
Quality implants have been heavily researched by the dental company, and the posts tend to be specially treated to make the integration process easier and more successful. Properly placed implants have a success rate of approximately 95% or higher, and will last a considerable number of years, or even your lifetime, making them a very cost-effective option.
