Do you feel anxiety over arranging dental appointments, or perhaps you haven’t felt able to visit your family dentist for years?
Adult orthodontics is far more popular than ever before and it is becoming increasingly common to see adults wearing braces. This dramatic increase in popularity is at least partly due to the introduction of newer braces technologies. Now it is possible to straighten more quickly and often more discreetly than ever before. Many people investigating orthodontic treatment will be enticed by the prospect of wearing a removable brace as there is no denying that this type of appliance can make treatment extremely easy. In spite of this, fixed braces are still very popular, but why might you opt for a fixed brace when removable braces give good results?
Even though removable braces can give wonderful results, they tend to be best used for more common orthodontic problems which can easily be rectified. If you have more complicated issues then it is possible your orthodontist at the Cosmetic Dentistry Center will recommend a fixed brace. Initially, this might seem a little disappointing, but it is worth looking at the bigger picture, as braces only need to be worn for a relatively short period of time so it is worthwhile opting for the option you’ve been advised will give the best and most predictable results.
Your dentist will have recommended a fixed brace if they feel you could benefit from more precise tooth movements that can best be provided by this type of appliance. The use of brackets fixed onto teeth enables treatment to be planned and executed far more precisely and the braces will be working every single minute to move your teeth. While very effective, removable braces aren’t quite able to offer this same high level of precision. If this isn’t necessary, then you may well be able to choose a removable brace.
Removable braces are great for correcting more commonplace problems and minor issues with tooth alignment. Some removable braces are very good at correcting problems affecting the front teeth only and these can often produce results within a very short space of time. One of the things that make removable braces so attractive is their ease of use as they can be taken out for eating and for brushing and flossing.
Both fixed and removable braces can be very discreet. While removable braces may consist of clear plastic aligners that fit over the teeth, forcing them to move, modern fixed braces can have clear or tooth colored brackets combined with very thin wires that can also be colored to blend in with your teeth. Fixed braces do require a bit more care when brushing and flossing and when deciding which type of foods to eat, but it is easy to get used to wearing them.
The only way to find out for sure which type of brace will work best for you is to visit our orthodontist at the Cosmetic Dentistry Center. An assessment will allow them to check your tooth alignment and bite or occlusion and from there they will recommend the best options.
